What is a GST?

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is applied as a percentage on top of, or included within, the value of goods and services in India. Depending on whether a transaction is within the same state or across states, GST is split into CGST + SGST (intra-state) or IGST (inter-state). This calculator handles the common intra-state case, splitting the tax evenly between CGST and SGST.

How is it calculated?

GST = (Base × Rate) ÷ 100 · Total = Base + GSTTo extract GST from an inclusive amount: Base Value = Inclusive Amount ÷ (1 + Rate/100).

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

CGST and SGST apply to transactions within the same state and are split evenly between the central and state governments. IGST applies to transactions between different states and goes to the central government, which then apportions it. This calculator models the intra-state (CGST + SGST) case.

How do I know which GST rate applies to my product or service?

GST rates vary by category and are set by the GST Council. Check the applicable rate for the specific goods or service, since it isn’t a single flat rate across everything.

Can I calculate GST backwards from a total that already includes it?

Yes. Switch the calculation type to work out the base value and tax component from a GST-inclusive amount.
